Baldy Blitz - New Year's Eve Super Tour
Submitted by admin on December 20, 2008 - 11:16pmThe first annual Baldy Blitz starts at 6 pm in Breckenridge on New Year's Eve. Do something fun this New Year's and come ski a great loop with friends - no entry fee, no numbers. The only required gear is a HEADLAMP WITH NEW BATTERIES AND A BACKPACK. The course climbs 1,200 feet, the fastest skiers will finish in about an hour.
We're calling it a Super Tour: all the climbs are winding single skin tracks and the downhills are jeep road width or wider. Yes, you can race, but beware of heavy handicapping (thus the need for the backpack). Let's just say the faster skiers will be gaining extra items during the tour that will slow them down.
Start: 6 pm at the Sally Barber Trailhead on French Gulch Road.
Directions to Start: From Hwy. 9 traffic circle in Breck, go north 1,000 ft., east at the 7-11 stoplight on Huron Rd, go 1,200 ft then bear right on Reiling Rd, go approximately 3/4 mile to stop sign, go left (east) on French Gulch Rd about 2.5 miles to trailhead on the right.
Course (1,200 ft. of total climbing): From Sally Barber Rd, go 200 ft. and the road turns sharp right; the skin track starts 25 ft after the turn on the left (east) side of the road. Follow pink ribbons southeast and climb gradually to the Nightmare on Baldy trail, follow flat traverse to power-line (50 ft. after the wood fence/no motorized chicane), descend the power-line to Sally Barber rd. Climb right (north) 150 ft. to the Sally Barber Mine, climb the new Nightmare trail (300 ft), again descend the powerline then climb back to Sally Barber and descend the road to the trailhead.
AT / Tele / touring gear (all with skins) are recommended - pretty much anything that you're comfortable skiing downhill, whilst trash-talking the cheater ahead of you, with a headlamp - is good. One could almost manage this with xc touring gear and kickwax, but the poling lanes are bottomless, it's not quite wide enough to herringbone and it keeps snowing - it's more fun on skins.
COSMIC Ski Nov. 29th and Clinic Update
Submitted by admin on November 28, 2008 - 3:39pmThere is good skinning at Breckenridge ski area from town (Peak 9) to the Vista Haus.
A group will be heading up the hill Saturday Nov. 29th at 7:30 am from The Maggie at the base of Peak 9. If you're up this way, join us for a few laps. You can email pete@cosmicski.com to make sure you meet us.
As of Friday November 28th there is little backcountry skiing in Summit County. While we could do a clinic on the area (Breckenridge does allow skinning during the day), it isn't ideal for a group to skin up the edge of the run during the day. As soon as we have some backcountry skiing we'll fire up a proper COSMIC clinic.
Saturday, Nov. 8th skin from Peak 8 Base @ 7:30 am
Submitted by admin on November 7, 2008 - 8:14pmCome join us for an am skin on Peak 8. The easiest way to get to Peak 8 is the Black Bus (note that it might also be the Breck Ski Bus) from Breckenridge Station (it's next to the gondola). The 7:15 bus gets us there at 7:30. Start the season and stay for the CAIC Benefit Bash at the Riverwalk center at 5pm.
Colorado Avalanche Information Center Bash (and COSMIC Saturday 7:30 am skin)
Submitted by admin on October 23, 2008 - 8:55am
Come up to Breckenridge on Saturday, November 8th to support the CAIC. Any time you're heading into the backcountry the CAIC avi report is essential reading - CAIC helps keep us on top of the snow when we're not skiing at COSMIC races. Tickets are available here:
https://www.choicesecure01.net/mainapp/eventschedule.aspx?clientID=riverwalk
We'll be skinning up the ski area that morning at 7:30 am (one, maybe two laps). I will post a meeting place the week prior, it depends on where the skinning/skiing is best. Also, if there's snow we'll head off to Peak 6 or similar for some early season powder turns.
Hope to see you early Saturday morning and at the CAIC Bash. It's guaranteed skiing - and three beers come along with your Bash ticket. - PS
Your first rando/ski mountaineering race - what to expect and what you need:
Submitted by admin on October 19, 2008 - 8:08pmEvents are similar to local mountain bike race or fun run. Once the start gun goes off, the race spreads out and everyone goes their own pace. There’s nobody in the woods or on the mountain early in morning to see how slow (or fast) you’re going - so don’t worry about “how I’ll do”. Just look forward to powder skiing and getting in some good exercise.

Point System
Submitted by admin on October 10, 2008 - 8:14pmThe Goals of the National Points Rankings/ Skin to Win:
- Encourage people to attend more events and lower their points
- Competitors in different regions of the country can accurately compare points (results) in a season
- Better courses: events wishing for a B, C or H classification must have minimum vertical, number of transitions and contact the USSMA to include their event on the calendar
- Picking US National teams for World Cup and World Championship events will be based on these rankings. Note that for World Championship selection there will always be one or more "automatic qualifier" races.
- A "Skin to Win" Prize fund: On May 1st, we'll know who the top 5 men and women in the country are. The USSMA is seeking a prize $ sponsor for the Skin To Win Nation's Best Award
2008 Points have been configured as baseline handicap points for 2009. Races used in 2008 include: Sunlight, Snowmass, Whitefish, Mad River Valley, Crested Butte, Loveland, Alta, Jackson and A Basin.
Link to: 2008 Points
Points explained - For an outline of how points systems work, go to ussa.org and read on nordic points. (Alpine is also illustrative. Bode's FIS DH points are 00.06!) The rando system is based on the Nordic Points formula for F values and formulas. As 2009 is the first year for the rankings, the F values and race handicaps may be adjusted if points aren't accurately reflecting competitor's results/difficulty of course/competition. After a full year and using 08 points as a baseline we'll have a good indicator of the accuracy of the points system.
- Race Points formula: Points = ((racers time in seconds/time of winner) - 1) x F + Pn
- Pn - Penalty formula: Sum of top 5 points (200 are assigned for '08 results through Crested Butte), eliminating highest and lowest, then dividing by 3.75.
- F Values: A - (800) National Championship and US World Cup events, B - (1200) COSMIC, Powder Keg, Mad River Glen and other established events, C - (1400) new events with minimum of 2,500 vertical and four transitions, H - (1500) hillclimbs, team events and new events not meeting C certifications
- Competitors' two best results of the 2008 season (with a Feb. 25th update) counted in the 'baseline' rankings. Competitors with a top five result and no other are penalized 22%.
Updated Points List - 2009 Points will be re-calculated on February 15th, March 15th and May 1st. A racer's best three points finishes will detemine his or her ranking on May 1st.
Wick ups the watts
Submitted by admin on October 10, 2008 - 2:55pmWe just received this picture of COSMIC series champ and National team member Bryan Wickenhauser putting up some numbers in the lab. He apparently kicked a nordic skier off the treadmill and stole his poles. Hopefully it'll snow early in Crested Butte and he can get off that thing. Looking good Wick!
